Το γερμανικό κοινοβούλιο εκλέγει την Άνγκελα Μέρκελ στο αξίωμα του καγκελάριου της Γερμανίας. Είναι η πρώτη γυναίκα καγκελάριος της Γερμανίας, και πρώτος πρώην πολίτης της Γερμανικής Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας που υπήρξε καγκελάριος της επανενωμένης Γερμανίας.
