Ο Χριστόφορος Κολόμβος αποβιβάζεται σε ένα νησί, που είχε εντοπίσει την προηγούμενη μέρα, και το ονομάζει San Juan Bautista (Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Βαπτιστής). Αργότερα το νησί μετονομάστηκε σε Πουέρτο Ρίκο.

Γερμανικά στρατεύματα επιτίθενται εναντίον της Σάμου. Επειδή η τροπή των επιχειρήσεων ήταν δυσμενής, το Στρατηγείο της Μ. Ανατολής διατάζει τους Ιερολοχίτες και τους Βρετανούς Κομάντος να εκκενώσουν το νησί. Κατά την εκκένωση, μαζί με τις παραπάνω δυνάμεις, μεταφέρθηκαν στην Τουρκία 12.800 Έλληνες πρόσφυγες και 8.000 Ιταλοί.
