Η Μερτσέντες με οδηγό τον Πιέρ Λεβέ (Pierre Levegh) πέφτει επάνω στο πλήθος των θεατών στον αγώνα των 24 ωρών του Λε Μαν. Ο οδηγός και άλλα 80 άτομα έχασαν τη ζωή τους. Το δυστύχημα θεωρείται το πιο καταστροφικό στην ιστορία του μηχανοκίνητου αθλητισμού.
